Towing in Canmore & the Bow Valley
Mountain grades on the Trans-Canada west — brakes, weather and wildlife.
+1 (587) 436-8900The Trans-Canada west of Calgary climbs into the Bow Valley, and mountain grades break vehicles in ways flat prairie driving does not. Brake fade on loaded units, overheating on the climb, and winter conditions that change between Calgary and Canmore on the same trip. Add heavy tourist traffic in vehicles the drivers are not familiar with — rentals, RVs, towed trailers — and the call volume is not what the population would suggest.
The roads
Where the calls come from
Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1)
Sustained grades in both directions. Brake and cooling failures on loaded units are the signature local call.
Bow Valley Trail / Highway 1A
The slower parallel route through Exshaw and Seebe, and a common breakdown location.
Highway 40 & Smith-Dorrien
Kananaskis access — remote, seasonal, and where a recovery means a long approach.
What goes wrong
Local conditions
- Conditions change with elevation: clear in Calgary can be snowing at Scott Lake Hill and drifting by Dead Man's Flats.
- Loaded RVs and trailers cook their brakes on the descents, which is a recovery rather than a repair.
- Wildlife collisions are common at dawn and dusk and often leave a vehicle undriveable well away from services.
Who calls
What we move here
- RVs, rentals and trailered vehicles on the Trans-Canada grades

Common questions
Canmore & the Bow Valley questions
- Can you tow an RV or a motorhome in the Bow Valley?
- Yes. RVs and motorhomes need a deck and rigging sized for them, which is why a standard light-duty truck often arrives and cannot help. Give dispatch the length and whether it is drivable, and the right equipment is sent first time.
- Do you come out to Kananaskis?
- Yes, on Highway 40 and the surrounding access roads. Be aware these are long approaches with patchy cell coverage — if you have a location from a maps app, read us the coordinates, because 'on Highway 40' can mean an hour of difference.
